The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Back in 1987 Gordon Gekko (played by Michael Douglas), the protagonist in Oliver Stone's movie Wall Street, told the shareholders of Teldar Paper Company that "greed is good. Greed is right. Greed works." Director Martin Scorsese's protagonist, Jordan Belfort (played by Leonardo DeCaprio), embodies Gekko's creed. Belfort and his colleagues are coke-snorting, sex-obsessed, greed-intoxicated stock brokers who have nothing but disdain for their clients. Clearly, the best way to make money on financial advice is to give it rather than receive it. At times, Scorsese's satire nails our zeitgeist. At other times, the three-hour story drags, and feels like a frat house farce. The movie is "based on a true story," which is not hard to believe, given other appalling accounts like Michael Lewis's book Liar's Poker (1989) about his time at Salomon Brothers as a bond salesman.
