The Disaster Artist (2017)The Disaster Artist (2017)

The film critic Justin Chang of the LA Times called this movie about a movie "a hilarious, heartening celebration of failure." James Franco won a Golden Globe as best actor, and also produced and directed the film, which is based upon the non-fiction book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside the Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made by Greg Sestero. Back in 1998, Sestero met an eccentric and enigmatic man named Tommy Wiseau in acting classes in San Francisco. The two became friends, then moved to Los Angeles to chase their cinematic dreams. After Hollywood crushed their hopes, Wiseau decided to make and star in his own movie, called "The Room" (2003), which today has achieved cult status as one of the "best worst movies" ever made. Franco, his brother Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, and others re-tell this improbable story of a horrendous film that was self-financed, doesn't have any clear narrative or plot, is full of all sorts of blunders, but that nonetheless can still be seen today amidst side-splitting laughter at midnight showings. The Disaster Artist debuted at the South by Southwest film festival, where the audience gave it a standing ovation.
