Dolly Parton: A MusiCares Tribute (2021)
I had never heard of MusiCares, which is the non-profit foundation of the Recording Academy (the same organization that distributes the Grammys). Each year MusiCares honors a Person of the Year for their music and their philanthropy at an annual fund-raising concert for the foundation. Past recipients have included Pavarotti, Elton John, Bono, Aretha Franklin, and Stevie Wonder. Dolly Parton was the first country artist to receive the award, and this 50-minute feel-good concert documentary celebrates her musical life (3,000 songs) and philanthropic legacy. A who's-who of mainly woman musicians pay tribute to Dolly, beginning with Miley Cyrus (Dolly is her godmother) and Shawn Mendes. My two favorite takes were 88-year-old Willy Nelson and 82-year old Mavis Staples. For more on this subject see my review of the movie Dolly Parton: Here I Am (2019). I watched this film on Netflix Streaming.
