We Steal Secrets; The Story of WikiLeaks (2013)
Is Julian Assange a hero or an enemy of the state? You can watch this documentary and decide for yourself, for it shows the good, the bad, and the ugly about the Australian hacker turned media rock star turned wanted man. On the Colbert show, director Alex Gibney said that he couldn't interview Assange for the movie because he asked to be paid. WikiLeaks is an electronic drop box, where anyone can deposit material with a guarantee of anonymity and untraceability. Plus, the web site always lists its most wanted leaks. The Bradley Manning case, the largest security breach in history, went to trial just as this film was released. And within a day or so of that, news stories revealed America's vast surveillance system of the phone and internet activity of all its citizens. Since June 19, 2012, Assange has been inside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he has since been granted diplomatic asylum. He fears extradition to the United States or Sweden.
